DNF at 23%

I usually finish the books I start. But here I just couldn't.
The book started good, I really liked Drew and found him funny for the first 20% or so. Until they started to compete for the account. I'm sorry, but for me, two supposedly clever people competing for the most immature behavior isn't funny.

Macrieve (Immortals After Dark)

MacRieve - Kresley Cole

*Spoilers free review*

MacRieve is the thirteen instalment in the Immortals After Dark series. I’ve been eagerly waiting for this book for 18 months or so. I simply LOVE this series. For me this is one of the best in the paranormal romance genre. I also love Kresley Cole's historical romances, and when I loved her first foray in the YA genre (a genre I really don’t like) I thought that she definitely couldn’t disappoint me whatever she wrote.

I was wrong.

With Shadow’s Claim (The Dacians #1 — a spinoff of the IAD series) and this one, I was disappointed.

This book is directly linked to book 11 (Dreams of a Dark Warrior) and it started really good but in the end it didn’t deliver.

MacRieve aka Uilleam aka Will aka one half of the Hot and Hotter duet aka head case, is the epitome of the tortured hero. He really had to deal with a lot and I really liked him, even when he wasn’t so nice with Chloe.

Chloe starts as a witty, cheeky, strong and resourceful heroine. When something bad happens to her, her motto is “rub some dirt on it and move on”. Unfortunately, as the book went on so did her spunk.

The plot didn’t help, simply because there was no plot whatsoever. Worse, there was no action. Furthermore, a lot of things/reactions didn’t make sense for me and there was too many too easy coincidences or about turns. And what happened with Chloe’s father? Really??? *rolls eyes*

I’m sad to say that the short epilogue with its bloody cliffhanger was more interesting than the book itself. Hopefully, Munro’s book will be better than his twin’s.

The Gamble (Colorado Mountain)

The Gamble - Kristen Ashley It was my first Kristen Ashley book and it won't be the last!I LOVE that book! It was a simple story told with a lot of talent. I loved the dialogues!I loved Nina and Max. Nina is strong, generous, loving and funny. Max is caring, HOT, swoon-worthy and bigger than life. I loved their relationship! I also loved the other characters and their interactions :-)Edit: that book made me laugh (a lot) and cry.

Fire Inside (Chaos, #2)

Fire Inside (Chaos, #2) - Kristen Ashley I'm sorry to say it, but Fire Inside didn't do it for me.It isn't that it was bad. It's just that there was nothing new and no story line to make the book interesting. To make things worse I couldn't connect with Lanie or Hope and their "I'm coming to try to reconcile but I'm living you" dance almost made this one a DNF.

Heart of Obsidian

Heart of Obsidian - Nalini Singh

*Spoilers free review*

“You are mine.” simple, quiet words that were a punch to the chest. “I will fight for you, today, tomorrow, and all the tomorrows to come.”

Oh, my! Saying that Nalini Singh delivered with this Psy-Changeling book is an understatement. I just LOVED this book, the heroes, the way NS describes their relationships, the general plot, the answers,... Everything!

Heart of Obsidian picks up right where Tangle of Need ended. This book is focused on the Psys and has a slower pace but it perfectly suits the story and the characters.

I’m so happy that two of my hypothesis were right :D Can't wait for the next book and wonder who will be the next couple...

Some random quotes...

“It feels like a full-body kiss,” she whispered as her inner muscles began to clench in a quieter but no less potent pleasure.

Then he bent his head and told her they should practice kissing, voice as chill as frost... And eyes licked with black fire.

“I can’t become who I’m meant to be in your shadow. I’m afraid of waking up one day and finding there’s nothing left inside me but this furious need for you that wrenches away my sanity.”

“Am I so important to you?”
“Yes,” he said. “You’re everything.” The entire reason for his existence.

" You are here,” he said in a tone that made her heart thump wildly against her ribs, “because you belong to me."

This Is Who I Am (Masters of the Shadowlands 7)

This Is Who I Am - Cherise Sinclair

*Spoilers free review*

He gave her a contemplative stare as if he’d never had a woman tease him. Then again, who in their right mind would tease a sadist?

Amongst the BDSM themed books the sadist/masochist couples are part of the ones I like the least. I’m sorry, but I can’t find a sadist appealing so if I can help it I tend to avoid BDSM books with sadist heroes.

That being said, even though I knew that Sam and Linda fell in that category I couldn’t wait to read “This is Who I Am”. For three reasons. The first one is although Sam is a sadist, since book 5 I couldn’t help but like him. The second reason is because in book 6, wanting to help Linda, Sam ended up messing up big time. He knows something went wrong but doesn’t know what and feel bad about it. The last reason is because in this book the identity of the mole in the Shadowlands Club was to be revealed (this particular sadist was creepy).

And then he’d made a mistake; to this day, he wasn’t sure exactly what. He had ideas, but hell, he could be totally off base.

“I’m not sure what I did.” Where were all the arguments he’d come up with over the past months? “But I did something wrong. I’m sorry, girl.”

Still, because of the MC's preferences I was prepared to not enjoy this book as much as the other, so this book was a really really good surprise. I don’t know how she did it but somehow Cherise Sinclair managed to write the story in such a way that their relationship was just beautiful and right.

With Sam, she’d felt safe. Safe enough to let go, to let pain transform into pleasure, to let herself slide into her happy place. His strength, his voice, even his brutal honesty was reassuring. So was the way he’d hold her afterward with surprisingly tender hands, caring for her as if she... meant... something.

I think that one of the things that allowed this achievement is that during the different BDSM scenes, instead of focusing on too much technical details or the pain side, Cherise Sinclair focused on the pleasure felt by Linda.

Glorious, erotic rawness. Unsure if she hurt or felt wonderful, she whimpered.
Delight filled his eyes.
[...] The pain was —as Goldilocks said—just right.

Another thing that helped is that not only none of them is in the humiliation stuff but after her abduction Linda is determined to be threated with respect and Sam is there to help her recover her self-esteem and confidence. I really liked the game they played where she was to receive “good” punishment if she misbehaved and “bad” ones if she was polite and compliant.

After donning the suit coat she’d fetched, he gave her an approving smile. “Miss Madison, I’m Sam Davies, the CEO of Pain International.” He held his hand out. (LOL!)

Sam is a really thoughtful and watchful Dom (inside and outside the club), Linda is a strong and loving woman and together they were beautiful. I think the fact that they are both mature added a dimension to their story.

Expecting to see amusement in his gaze, she saw only concern. It didn’t matter. She rose to her feet, rattled when he did the same. But he was the kind of man who’d observe that old-fashioned courtesy. A gentleman sadist.

"May have less muscles, but women got more guts than most men."

Of course this book being part of the Masters of the Shadowlands series, there was also funny moments. And I absolutely can’t wait for Sally, Galen and Vance story!!!

"Those two. They’ve got tag teaming down to a science. And they make me feel stupid. I never feel stupid. I need a drink."

Rising Tides (Quinn Brothers Series #2)

Rising Tides - Nora Roberts *Review without spoilers* Ray and Stella had taken them in, three half-grown boys, all wild, all damaged, all strangers. And had made them a family.Oh, my, Grace thought with her nose pressed up against the window. Oh, my. If she’d ever seen two more impressive examples of the male form, she couldn’t say when. She’d only intended to sneak a quick glance. Really. Just one innocent little peek. But then Ethan had peeled off his shirt and... Another multiple re read I don’t tire of...This book picks up where the first ended but the pace is different, matching the MCs personalities. Ethan is a waterman. He literally breaths and lives the sea. Come hell or high water, everyday at dawn he is out on his fishing boat. He is the solitary of the three Quinns brothers. The quite one. Contrary to Cam, he likes to think things thoroughly before making his moves. “You were meant to be ours. Meant to be here. Took to the water like you’d been born in it. Cam, he always just wanted to go fast, and Phillip preferred to sit back and enjoy the ride. But you...”He turned back again, his gaze thoughtful. “You studied every inch of the boat, every wave, every turn of a river. You’d practice tying knots for hours, and nobody had to nag you into swabbing the decks.”“It came easy for me, right from the start.”“Christ, you were a spooky kid, Ethan. Quiet as a shadow, deep as a lake.”“And that smile. It takes, like, ten minutes for it to finish moving over his face, and by then, man, you are drooling.” But when he let go...But, oh, he had a need, one that swamped him like a storm surge and left him floundering. The gentler, sweeter emotion that shimmered from him was so calmer than that first whip of greed; it only gilded the edges of the yearning he’d stirred. Grace is a young single mother. She is fiercely independant and working hard to built her baby girl a beautiful future, juggling with as many jobs as she can take. She had a sheltered childhood and it’s seems like she always was in love with Ethan. “Because she’s rock-steady, pretty as a picture, patient as Job, and she’s got enough humor about life to tickle out yours.”But the fact was, growing up, there had only been two things she’d wanted. The dance, and Ethan Quinn.“Damn, she’s the best thing that ever happened to you. I don’t just mean the sex, though that’s got to be part of what’s perked you up around here lately. The woman fits you like the proverbial glove.” Her feelings for Ethan are mutual. The problem is Ethan believes he’s too damaged for someone as bright and pure as Grace. There were shadows in those eyes that Ethan also recognized. The wounded recognized the wounded. He knew that Seth’s life, before Ray had taken him on, had been a nightmare. He’d lived through one himself.“Sometimes it still comes back on me. Pain and shame. And the sweaty fear of knowing what’s going to happen.” And between Ethan stubborness and Grace shyness, they most certainly need all the help they can get (and that was funny).“Not saying different. Just saying slow. Seen them moony-eyed over each other since before that boy got his own workboat. Has to be nearly ten years passed. Stella and I –bless her soul– had a conversation over it a time or two.”“Rabbits,” he said slowly. “Probably.”“Rabbits?”“Yeah.” He shifted uncomfortably, wishing to Christ he’d at least gotten his pants on before she burst in. “Rabbits can be a problem with gardens. They just hop up and help themselves.”“Rabbits,” she said again.“Could be deer,” he added, just a little desperately. “They’d graze over and eat every damn thing down to stubs.” Counting on pity, he shot a look at Cam. “Right?” (LMAO!)Seth is still in the heart of the story. Grace is the first woman, he trully trusts and loves and he has more things in commun with Ethan that he thinks. The way he settles in his new life is thrilling as well as heartbreaking. He didn’t want them to know he was waiting for them or that he was excited that they would be home any minute. But he was. He couldn’t understand why he was all pumped up about it. They’d only been gone a couple of weeks, and Cam was a pain in the ass most of the time anyway.Seth grabbed his sandpaper and began to work furiously. And blindly. His eyes were dazzled, his heart in his throat. It happened whenever one of them referred to him as a Quinn.Well, he was going to watch and he was going to see. He could still run if things got sticky. Though the idea of running made his stomach hurt in a way it had never done before. [...] He’d discovered that the Quinns kept their word. It was a new and wonderful concept to him, a promise kept. If they probe it now, he knew it would hurt more than anything had hurt him before.

Sea Swept (Quinn Brothers Series #1)

Sea Swept (Chesapeake Bay, Book 1) - Nora Roberts *Review without spoilers*“Don’t mix up who I am and what I am,” she told him quietly. “You have to be honest with me, or the rest of it means nothing.”He was on his knees on the platform as he spoke, using his hands to show her. And still leaving her in the dark. But it didn’t matter whether she understood the technique he described or not. She understood him. He might not realize it yet, but he had fallen in love with this place, and with the work he would do here. This was at least my fourth read and I still absolutely LOVE this book. The Chesapeake Bay saga is one of the best series written by Nora Roberts and is definitely one of my favorite. Each book has one love story but the general arc of the series revolve around ten years old Seth and the Quinn brothers relationship.Three men, three brothers, three reactions. Phillip’s polished welcome, Ethan’s vaguely embarrassed nod, and Cam’s irritated scowl. And there was no doubt each and every one of them looked outrageously male and appealing in sweat and tool belts.“Makes sense”, Phillip agreed and, feeling better, he grinned at Cam. “You’re Mommy.”“Fuck you.”“That’s no way for Mommy to talk.” Cameron Quinn is a successful champion boats racer, basking in the afterglow of his last win when he is called home to his dying father’s bed. Once there, dying Ray Quinn asks him and his two brothers to take care of Seth, the last damaged boy he was in the process of adopting. “I’m counting on each of you. Ethan takes things as they come and makes the best of them. Phillip wraps his mind around details and ties them up. You push at everything until it works your way. The boy needs all three of you. Seth’s what’s important. You’re all what’s important.” Once, all of them also were abused and troubled young boys, then Stella and Ray Quinn stepped into their lives and claimed them as their own. Not only they gave them a safe arbor but love, a family and, most of all, a life. Cam is a rough-edged adrenaline addict, always on the go and even if it costs him immensely he’s determined to hold the promise he gave his father and give Seth a home. But quickly they realize that keeping Seth's guardianship is not the only battle they have to fight.“I’m selfish, impatient. I go for the thrills because that’s what suits me. Paying your debts doesn’t have anything to do with having a good heart. I’m a son of a bitch, and I like it that way.” Seth broke my heart but it was so beautiful to see him opens up to his new guardians/brothers and I loved his relationship with Cam.“The kid's driving me bat-shit," Cam complained as he stalked into the kitchen. "You can't say boo to him without him squaring up for a fight.""Mm-hmm.""Argumentative, smart-mouthed, troublemaker.""Must be like looking in a mirror.""Like hell.""Don't know what I was thinking of. You're such a peaceable soul.”“You don’t want to get in the habit of overusing the word “fuck” as an adjective. You’ll miss the vast variety of its uses.” Then there is Anna. She’s the social worker in charge of Seth's pending adoption. After Ray’s death she goes to meet with the Quinn brothers to evaluate the situation. She is a no-bullshit but warm, loving and passionate woman who takes her job seriously. “You said you survived, Anna, but you didn’t. You triumphed. Everything about you is a testament to courage and strength.”He could have denied it, could have taken the I-don’t-know-what-you’re-talking-about approach and done an expert job of it. But her eyes had the same effect on him as they’d had on Seth. They wouldn’t let his tongue wrap itself around a decent lie.Their relationship was hot and fun and the scene where they declared their love to each other one of the best and funiest ever :DPhillip could only close his eyes. “For God’s sake, you’re hitting on the social worker.” “She’s hitting on me, too.” Cam flashed a grin. “I like it.”Sometimes, she thought, you had to go with your instincts, with your cravings. At that moment hers, all of hers, centered on him.The wanting was huge, ruthlessly keen, recklessly primitive. And for now, for both of them, it was all that mattered.
No Strings Attached - Kate Angell *2,5 stars*This book was a bit weird to read because it oscilatted between 4 and 2 stars. There is 2 love stories. The main one between Dune and Sophie and the secondary one between Mac and Jenna. We met all the characters in the previous book (No tan lines). Dune and Mac are back to Barefoot Williams for a month vacation, they are best friends and Professional beach volley partners. Sophie is a book worm, tremendously shy and with lots of phobia. One of those being she’s afraid of water. She also doesn’t stand sun so well, so each time she dares to go on the beach she is wearing hat, windbreaker and rubber boots. But this summer she decided it was high time to take some risks and emancipate herself from all her fears. She also has a crush for Dune since she was a kid.Dune is attracted to Sophie and find her absolutely cute, but aware of her shyness he’s hiding his feeling for her. Because of that the romance is quiet slow to kick.Mac and Jenna has a totally opposite relationship. She is as straight forward and sharp tongued as Sophie is shy and sweet, and externally she and Mac can’t stand each other. My favorite character in the book is definitely Mac. He was part of most of the 4 stars moments of the book with or without Jenna. This man produces witty comebacks as naturally as he breaths. The story was sweet but sometimes too sweet for me, thus the 2 stars moments. Another thing that also dragged the story in my opinion is all the "historical" moments.
